Liam Melady on Music, Miscommunication, and 'Settle Down'

Liam Melady provides a fascinating look into his role as Malcolm in the web series "Settle Down." He shares his favourite scenes, personal rituals, and the aspects of Malcolm's character that resonate with him. Liam also discusses his love for music, both as a therapeutic outlet and a tool for getting into character. Additionally, he invites fans to connect with him on social media.

What's your favourite scene from "Settle Down" and why?

My favourite scene for Malcolm is definitely the “intro to Malcolm” scene that takes place in the café. As Mason confronts Malcolm, the miscommunication slowly escalates line by line, ultimately leaving Malcolm thinking that Mason is coming for his livelihood and Mason thinking that Malcolm is a prostitute coming for his man. Obviously, we know that’s not the case, but the way Alex wrote this scene is so inherently funny and so fun to play.

How would you describe "Settle Down" to a friend in one sentence?

I would describe "Settle Down" as a very accurate depiction of just how nuanced, complicated, and messy relationships, or “situationships,” can be. The demise of many relationships is often a result of poor communication, and I think "Settle Down" tackles that perfectly!

What do you enjoy doing when you're not acting?

Outside of acting, I really love to sing and write music. It’s kind of a cliché answer, but music really is very therapeutic for me. It’s a great way to release thoughts or feelings when I don’t necessarily want to share them with a friend, family member, or therapist.

Do you have any rituals or habits to get into character before a scene?

Music! Music holds such a special place in my life. When I’m working on a character, I like to curate a playlist that reflects this character to help me navigate their thoughts and vibes.

Do you see any of yourself in the character you play on the show?

Definitely! I think Malcolm has a clear vision of where he wants to be in life but doesn’t necessarily know how to get there. He doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. Similarly, I have many personal goals that I hope to accomplish, but getting there isn’t necessarily a clear, linear path. Although this can be anxiety-inducing, the unknown element of pondering “what could be” is what fuels me.
