Matt Wells, known for his role as Eddie in the web series "Settle Down," shares his thoughts on his favorite scenes, his passion for music, and how he connects with his character. Matt's journey from singing in a band to acting has been transformative, and he offers insights into his process and personal experiences.
What's your favorite scene in "Settle Down" scripts and why?
Anything with Georgia. Such a well-written character and SO much fun. The dynamic between Mason and Georgia is electric, and their scenes are always filled with tension, humor, and unexpected twists. Georgia brings out a side of Mason that is both vulnerable and chaotic, which makes for some of the most entertaining and memorable moments in the series. Her character challenges Mason in ways that push the story forward, and I love how their interactions reveal deeper layers of both characters.
How would you describe "Settle Down" to a friend in one sentence?
In a time when trying to meet someone has never been more complicated, we are all still connected by the desire to love and be loved. This show captures the essence of modern dating with all its quirks, challenges, and heartfelt moments, reflecting the universal longing for connection and understanding in an increasingly complex world.
What do you enjoy doing when you're not acting?
Singing in a band, writing songs, and touring the world is how I caught the performing bug. It’s what I thought my whole life would be before acting and writing came along. I still write and play when I can. And still daydream about being back on tour. Music has always been my first love, and it’s a huge part of who I am. The thrill of performing live, the creative process of songwriting, and the camaraderie of being in a band are experiences that I cherish deeply. Even though acting has taken the forefront, music remains a vital outlet for my creativity and passion.
Do you have any rituals or habits to get into character before a scene?
Music is big for me. I like to think about what the character’s favorite song or artist might be and let that help me connect and find my way. For Eddie, I created a playlist that I felt resonated with his personality and his journey throughout the series. Music helps me tap into the emotional landscape of the character, setting the tone for how they perceive and react to the world around them. It’s a powerful tool that grounds me and helps me transition into the character’s mindset.
Do you see any of yourself in the character you play on the show?
Anytime I take on a new character, I try to inject a little bit of myself and my own lived experiences. Eddie is a mess, and even though he’s pretty selfish in his approach, he’s trying to find his true self. I think that search is something everyone can relate to. Eddie’s journey of self-discovery, his flaws, and his desire for authenticity are aspects that resonate with me. Like Eddie, I’ve had moments of uncertainty and growth, and bringing those personal experiences to the character helps make him more relatable and authentic.
Where can fans find you online if they want to connect?
I pop my head out on Instagram from time to time. @mattawells. I enjoy sharing snippets of my life, projects, and passions with my followers. It's a great way to stay connected with fans and give them a glimpse into my world, whether it’s about my latest acting projects, music endeavors, or just everyday moments.
